In the year 1979 the Government Unani Medical College was established in Chennai City. The first batch of students were admitted in the year 1979 in a Pre-Tib (Pre-degree course) course of 2 year and 5 ½ year of Main course of B.U.M.S. The classes for first batch of Main Course of B.U.M.S have commenced in the year 1982 in the campus of Arignar Anna Govt. Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai-106. This College was affiliated with University of Madras. In the year 1988 the Government. Unani Medical College, Chennai. is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai and conducting the U.G Course (B.U.M.S.) in Unani system of Medicine in the State of Tamil Nadu.

The initial annual intake of students from the inception of the College is 26 In the year 2016 the BUMS seats have been increased from 26 to 60. The selection is based as per the rules framed by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the selection of professional courses following guidelines of Central Council of Indian Medicine(CCIM), New Delhi, (An autonomous body regulating the educational standards under the Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. India).

The Government Unani Medical College has a main building and Three Academic Block buildings. All the 14 departments are housed in these four buildings. In addition to it College departments have independent departmental libraries, Herbal Garden, Pharmacy and Out-Patient /In-Patient Radiology Department (X-ray, Ultrasonogram), ECG, Bio-chemical, Pathological laboratory facilities in the Campus of Arignar Anna Govt. Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai.

The Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine is attached to Government Unani Medical College in which there is a separate department for Unani system of Medicine having a 100 bedded Male, Female and Children ward. The hospital has X-ray unit, ECG, USG and Clinical laboratory facilities.

The herbal garden is located in the Govt Arignar Anna Hospital Campus. It has 153 species and more than 153 unani medicinal plants for the purpose of teaching which includes identification, cultivation, conservation, collection and preservation techniques of live plants.

The Government Unani Medical College has separate Hostel for female students which is situated in the secured and peaceful environment of Arignar Anna Govt Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai. It has the capacity to hold 72 inmates, with its own kitchen and recreation facilities. The Deputy Warden is posted to supervise the students and also to take care of their day to day needs.

The Library is having 3694 Unani Books, 2172 Modern Medicine and related books, 21 medical journals and other books viz. Ayurveda and Siddha system books - 7577. Totally there are 13464 books available. The library is equipped with computers with internet facility and having seating capacity up to 100

Admission Process

Admission into BAMS, BHMS, BUMS & BNYS Courses in all the Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Unani and Naturopathy Medical Colleges affiliated to Dr.M.G.R. Medical University,Chennai for the academic year under Competent Authority Quota seats i.e., the seats in Government Ayurveda, Homoeopathy & Unani Colleges and Competent Authority Seats in Private Un-aided Non-Minority Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Naturopathy Medical Colleges under Dr.M.G.R. Medical University,Chennai.

The admission for Homeopathic colleges in Private colleges is divided into two categories :

  • Government Seats and
  • Government Quota Seats in Self-Financing Medical Colleges

Government Seat: The seats available in BSMS / BAMS / BUMS / BHMS courses in Government Medical Colleges.

GOVERNMENT QUOTA SEATS IN SELF-FINANCING MEDICAL COLLEGES: Allotments of seats to BSMS / BAMS / BHMS courses in Self Financing Medical Colleges will be based on the merit and following the Rule of Reservation and subject to the availability Apportionment of seats between Government and Management of Self Financing Colleges of Indian Systems of Medicine is as follows.

Note: 1. In respect of BUMS course any unfilled BC seats will be filled only by BC Muslims and any MBC/DNC, SC/SCA/ST vacant seat will be filled by throwing open to Open Competition if no BC, MBC/DC, SC, SC (Arunthathiyars), ST candidates are available.

2. Reservation as applicable at the time of Counseling will be followed.

Course Duration:

4 1/2 years + 1 Year compulsory rotatory residential internship.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: -

  1. Candidate should be a citizen of India.
  2. Applicants must have passed class 10+2 or HSE or equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry, Biology as mandatory subjects.
  3. Candidates must have scored minimum 50% marks in Biology or Botony & Zoology,Physics & Chemistry.
  4. The Minimum age of the applicant at the time of admission should be 17 years.
  5. Applicant must be NEET qualified.

NATIVITY:-

i. Candidate should be a Native of Tamil Nadu.

ii. Candidates who are native of Tamil Nadu studied from VI to XII Std. either partly or completely in schools situated outside Tamil Nadu should produce the “Nativity Certificate”.

iii. The Certificate of Nativity in Tamil Nadu should be issued by the competent authority only in the specified format available (ANNEXURE IV) in the prospectus and supported by a copy of Passport / Aadhar Card / Ration Card / Birth Certificate. If the copy of the supporting document is not produced, then the application form will be rejected. Nativity Certificate submitted later will be summarily rejected.

iv. Applications without a proper Nativity Certificate will not be considered.

v. Permanent Residence Certificate will not be accepted.

vi. Foreign Nationals though they might have studied from 6th standard onwards or in a college in Tamil Nadu , they are NOT eligible to apply for admission to B.S.M.S. /B.A.M.S./ B.U.M.S./ B.H.M.S courses 2021-22 session.

vii. Other State candidates who have studied from VI Standard to XII Standard continuously in Tamil Nadu, will be deemed to be native of Tamil Nadu and will be considered under the Open Category.

viii. Community Certificate obtained from other States will not be considered for reservation and such candidates will be treated as open category.

  1. NEETUG - 2021 Score Card.
  2. NEETUG - 2021 Admission Card.
  3. Mark sheets of H.S.C. (Academic) examination (Both Eleventh & Twelfth Standard)(both side of mark sheet should be Photo copied) or any other equivalent examination of the first appearance.
  4. Transfer certificate obtained after the completion of H.S.C.(Academic) or equivalent courses.
  5. Nativity certificate (wherever necessary)
  6. Permanent Community Certificate Card/ Certificate issued online.
  7. Annual Income Certificate if it is applicable.
  8. First Graduate Certificate if it is applicable.
  9. Bonafide Certificate as per Annexure XI for 7.5% reservation(if applicable).
  10. Bonafide Certificate for proof of studying VI – XII in Tamil Nadu.
