Government Unani Medical College (GUMC), Bangalore, was established in September 1975, following the historic All India Tibbi Conference held in 1973 at the Glass House in Lalbagh, Bangalore. During the inauguration, the late Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi, announced the commencement of the college from the next academic year. Dr. Melkote played a pivotal role in shaping its foundation, offering key recommendations, with the primary objective of producing competent, integrated doctors who are well-versed in Unani medicine while being equally knowledgeable about modern trends in healthcare and service to humanity. The increasing demand for Unani medicine in the state further fueled the need for such an institution, and the vision was eventually realized with the establishment of GUMC in 1975, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the field of Unani medicine. In 1989, land for the construction of Government Unani Medical College (GUMC), Bangalore, was allocated on Magadi Road, Basaveshwarnagar. The construction of the college began in 1996, and in 2004, the college was relocated from Mysore Road to its new premises in Basaveshwarnagar. The building was formally inaugurated on February 10, 2004, by Dr. A.B. Malaka Reddy. Shortly thereafter, land for the GUMC hospital was allocated just across from the college. The 100-bed GUMC Hospital was officially inaugurated on June 5, 2017, by Shri Ramesh Kumar, the Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka. The college is actively involved in organizing free Unani medical camps and health awareness programs across Bangalore and its surrounding areas. Since its inception, the college has also participated in various sports and extracurricular activities. The college admits 60 students for its undergraduate program annually and offers postgraduate courses in two specialized subjects: Ilmul Qabalat and Amraz-e-Niswan (Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Jild-o-Tazeeniyat (Dermatology and Cosmetology).
